I decorated my Horror Party as if my guests were attending a classic horror movie at the theater. The scary monsters, vampires and fiends of the old 1930’s black and white horror films include some of the best horror movie characters of all time.   • Old Movie Camera/Projector – make out of cardboard and other materials

  • Graveyard Scene:
    • Grave Tombstones
    • Empty grave site, shovel, skeleton or fake Halloween body parts
  • Castle Scene Setter – castle stone wall backdrop to decorate walls
  • Castle Stairway, Window Scene Setter
  • Black Plastic Tablecloth Roll for walls – to help create the black and white horror film scene
  • Black and White Streamers – hang in front of the black plastic tablecloth on walls to add depth to the black and white horror movie scene
  • Closed Coffin with Candelabra on Top
  • Make an open Coffin with body or mummy inside
  • Operating Table for Frankenstein Monster
  • Fake Electrical Equipment Apparatus for Operating Table
  • Attach clear or white light set around fake electrical equipment
  • Place a Frankenstein Monster dummy on the operating table
    • For Frankenstein Monster dummy: use a realistic latex Boris Karloff Frankenstein mask for the head and stuff to hold it’s shape.

  • Whenever I am planning a birthday party for children, I put lot of thought into how to make it fun! If the kids aren’t able to take part in some really entertaining activities then they will just get bored. And that means the party is a flop! You should definitely consider activities that will allow the kids to move around and have fun.

  • I was asked by a friend to help plan a birthday party for her children, who just happen to be fraternal twins. I knew that both her son and daughter were super Disney movie fans. In fact, last Halloween they dressed up as Beauty and the Beast. And how cute they were!

  • I really wanted the twins birthday party to be a big hit for them and for their friends too. I suggested we plan an animated movie theme birthday party. The party invitations requested the party guests to come in costume, dressed as their favorite animated or live action movie character.

  • Prior to the day of the birthday party, I ordered some colorful Disney character cardboard standups. And I was able to find cardboard standees of some of the boys children’s favorite movie characters like Captain America, Minions and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was amazed at how many kids most loved movie characters are available in cardboard stand ups/standees/cutouts.
  • These party props are lots of fun for children’s birthday parties! Kids will absolutely love posing and taking selfies in their party costumes with their favorite Disney princess, the Little Mermaid, Jazmine, Elsa Frozen Snow Queen, Moana, Mulan, and many other characters.
  • I guarantee that having a few cardboard stand ups, standees and/or cardboard cutouts will make the birthday party so much more fun for the children.

  • I was also surprised to find a really cute Minion party prop decoration. It is a Minion Air Walker. It’s actually a weighted foil balloon. You just take it to a dollar store or party store and have them fill it with helium!
  • The kids at the birthday party had a great time playing with the minion balloon!

Karaoke Time and Sing Along Songs

  • On the day of the party, our little guests arrived dressed in costumes from Aladdin to Zarina, the Pirate Fairy.They looked awesome! The children snapped selfies and so did the adults!

  • After the great birthday celebration of cake eating, gift opening and party favor noise makers, we quickly moved on to karaoke time and sing-a-longs with karaoke music from the children’s favorite animated movies.
  • The boys and girls sang songs from Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Cars, Lion King, Moana, Frozen and more. Even the little toddlers in costumes tried to sing along. The videos we shot are a hoot!
  • When the party came to a close, the children went home happy and sleepy…now that party was a hit!

For my 1960’s party, we painted and decorated large wine bottles with long necks and used them as flower vases to adorn our party table.  We purchased toy tambourines and tied brightly colored ribbons on them.

Here is a fun idea for ladies to enjoy a women’s adult pajama party without having to spend the night or sleep over. Instead, invite your girlfriends to a pajama party breakfast. Your ladies’ pajama party can be held at your favorite local breakfast restaurant or even at a country club dining room. You can make reservations at the restaurant; or if you are a small group of less than ten, just walk in and wait for a table.

Many women do not want to drive alone at night, even if it’s just across town. And they don’t want to spend the night, such as a sleepover at someone’s home. But, you can still pull this party off by having it at as a P.J. breakfast. Trust me, this will be fun! I know, because my friends and I do this every couple of months and we all have such a great time showing up and showing off in our pajamas.

You and your guests will arrive at a local breakfast restaurant dressed in your pajamas (making some adjustments for being in public, of course). How to Throw a Western Style Theme Party

Western style theme parties are the easiest theme party to throw. Your guests will dress up in the casual style of cowboys, cowgirls and old west settlers.

I hosted my western theme party at a local BBQ restaurant that offered a free private party room. That was easy! This party was planned for an adults ladies group, but would be great for a co-ed mixed group, men, and for a kid’s/children’s western party too. The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo was in town, so my party guests dressed up cowgirl style. The cowgirls wore cowboy hats and western boots, western shirts, jeans, western style leather belts with big shiny rodeo belt buckles.

To prepare for my old west party, I made a Wanted poster photo prop from an old piece of cardboard. I printed out the lettering for the poster on heavy stock paper and used safe non-toxic school glue to adhere the Wanted/Reward lettering to the top and bottom of the poster. I planned to use the Wanted poster as a party photo booth. As my party guests arrived, each one of them posed for a selfie photo op by holding the Wanted poster in front of her face. Everyone became engaged in the process and we all had lots of fun posing for our old west mug shots.

 

The tables at the BBQ restaurant were made of dark stained, weathered-looking wood, so there was really no need for lots of centerpieces. Instead I brought along a very cute, and inexpensive, old western town standup centerpiece which came with sticker attachments to convert the look into a cowgirl themed party.

My party guests had fun exchanging white elephant gifts that matched our western party theme. The BBQ restaurant venue I chose is decorated in a Texas old west style. There were framed photos and artwork of cowboys in the old west, a Texas star, and the Texas State flag. Therefore, I had very little decorating to do and that was great for my party event budget. Our party favor bags were plain brown paper gift bags decorated with western style stickers which included a galloping horse, a sheriff’s star and a western frontier emblem. I decorated one of the chairs with a western boot, a party favor bag and a western hat, using a brightly colored poncho for the backdrop.

I spent zero dollars on a party music budget because our private dining room resonated with the sound of country western music emanating from the venue’s excellent sound system. The volume of the music was not too loud, and not too low, for our party. It was just perfect! And, my guests soon began to sing-a-long with the country songs. We did, however, cowgirl-up by giving a well-deserved nod to our great State of Texas by belting out, “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” Yee-haw! Then we laughed and talked while we enjoyed one of the best BBQ plate lunches around. And we even caught a few glimpses of a western style wedding reception party in full swing in an adjoining private room.

  • Hawaiian style grass table skirts work great for decorating an entryway and doorways in the home for your Hawaiian Luau. To hang the Hawaiian style grass table skirt, attach each end of the table skirt to the corners of the entryway or doorway and let it drape down in the middle. Hanging the grass table skirts at the entrance to the main Hawaiian Luau room will give your guests the sense of walking into a Hawaiian paradise. Make your indoor Hawaiian luau room even more inviting by hanging dark green and dark brown crepe paper party streamers, alternating the colors as you go. Create an easy romantic dinner party for two or Valentine’s Day dinner?  Do you have a new man or woman in your life? I have 7 foolproof steps for a Romantic Valentine’s Day Dinner Party for Two. These steps will work for any romantic dinner for two at your place.

Okay well, you say you have had several lunch and dinner dates and a movie date too. You seem to click so well and…you have caught yourself thinking that this one, might be “The One.” You want to invite this special person in your life into your home for a lovely dinner. You have discovered that your date’s favorite meal includes a medium rare tenderloin steak. I have a seven-step foolproof plan to make this romantic evening a success. However, to make this work, you will need to be the kind of person who believes fun can be romantic. And it helps if your date feels that way too.

Step 1:  Prepare and Cook a Tenderloin Steak and Salad dinner

What’s that you say, you are not a very good cook and even worse at grilling? Don’t give up! Fortunately, I have a very easy recipe for how to prepare and cook the perfect tenderloin steak dinner.

Step 2:  The Couple Who Cooks Together Stays Together

Set the stage for a relaxed romantic atmosphere by letting your date know that you will be preparing the meal together. Be sure to have a women’s apron and/ or a men’s apron, one for you and one for your date. Now you have successfully arranged to make your first dinner date at home together a relaxing and romantic evening of sharing and fun.

Step 3:  Give Yourself Plenty of Lead Time to Prepare for This Special At-Home Dinner Date

You don’t want to be rushed and appear nervous and tense. Decide what you will wear and have your outfit all ready for you to slip into shortly before your date arrives. If scheduling a maid service to come by the day before will take some of the stress off of your shoulders, then by all means make arrangements for that to happen.  Now take a deep breath…because you are almost home free.

Step 4:  Make a List and Go Grocery Shopping Two Days Prior to the Date Night

Review the recipe ingredients in Step 6 below, and be sure to have everything on hand that you will need to prepare the steak and dinner salad. Maybe even check with your favorite local meat market a week beforehand to ensure the tenderloin steaks you need will be available. Try to have an alternate meat market in mind just in case.

Step 5:  I am Going to Give You a Surprisingly Simple Recipe for Cooking Tenderloin Steaks Perfectly

First you will need to have all the items listed below on hand in your kitchen. If you are missing anything, add it to your grocery shopping list.

  • Cast Iron Skillet – If you don’t own a well-seasoned cast iron skillet, borrow one, or purchase a new pre-seasoned cast iron skillet. I will provide a link for one below; and if you have an Amazon Prime account they can usually deliver your purchase in only two days.
  • Olive Oil – It’s great if you have a no drip olive oil dispenser
  • Sea Salt
  • Peppercorns
  • Lettuce-I prefer Boston lettuce, but choose your favorite or your date’s favorite, if you know it.
  •  Salad Ingredients-Add salad ingredients as desired. I like peeled and sliced cucumbers, tomato wedges. For a real treat, add frozen blueberries that you have washed, dried and frozen a few days ahead of time.
  • Salad Dressing-You should probably know your date’s favorite salad dressing by now since you’ve had several dinner dates. If not, plan to have a few popular selections on hand. You might even whip up a vinaigrette dressing.

Step 6:  This is the Perfect Time to Turn on some Ambient Romantic Music to Invoke an Atmosphere of Relaxation and Romance

Light the candles on the dinner table on which you placed a lovely romantic table setting. Uncork that nice bottle of Bordeaux wine, let it breathe a little…then fill the wineglasses. Mmm, sounds nice, no? Yes. Ah, what a lovely feeling of pleasurable contentment. Now is the perfect moment to don and tie up each others’ aprons. Together you will create that wonderful steak and salad dinner together.

 

 

 

Ingredients

2 (2 – 2 1/2 inch-thick) tenderloin steaks (set the steaks out at least 20 minutes ahead of time)
2 tablespoons olive oil
sea salt
coarsely cracked black peppercorns

Directions

You and your date can don your aprons and have fun preparing the salad. Wash your salad and spin dry in a high quality salad spinner. I can personally highly recommend the OXO Good Grips Green Salad Spinner. You can work together peeling and slicing the cucumber and slicing the tomatoes into wedges. And if your date likes blueberries you can share a kiss and a couple of blueberries, or maybe share a blueberry and a couple of kisses too. Once you have added all your salad ingredients, place the salad in the fridge to keep it nice and cold and crisp.

Okay, here we go!

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Heat a large cast-iron skillet over high heat (do this about 10 minutes before adding the steaks to the pan). Turn on and set your stove-top hood fan on high for ventilation.

While the skillet is heating, use paper towels to pat dry the tenderloin steaks. Brush the steaks with olive oil, using more or less as necessary (adding the oil directly to the steaks will mean less smoke in the skillet). Salt and pepper the steaks on both sides. Don’t be afraid to go a little heavy with the salt and pepper as the searing process will cause some of the salt and pepper to remain in the skillet and not on the meat.  

When the skillet is extremely hot, add the steaks and sear evenly on all sides (top, bottom, and edges) for about 3 minutes per side and about 30 seconds per edge. This searing process should take about a total of 8 minutes.

If you have seared the steaks in an extremely hot cast iron skillet for 8 minutes or so, you should now have rare steaks.

If you prefer your steaks more well done, turn off the stove, grab an oven mitt and place the skillet with the seared steaks in the preheated oven on the center rack.

Cook the steaks for:

4 – 6 minutes for medium-rare (your date’s preference)

6 – 8 minutes for medium well

8 – 10 minutes for well-done (not recommended)

Once you have cooked the steaks to the desired done, remove the skillet from the oven and place the steaks on a board or plate. Tent a piece of aluminum foil over the steaks and let them rest for at least 5 minutes. Remember that the cooking time will vary according to the thickness of the steaks.

In the meantime, remove the salad from the fridge and place it on the dinner table. Uncover the steaks and place them on the table and enjoy what you have created together.

There you go, a very simple, but very satisfying steak and salad dinner. All you need to do is add the ambiance and romance.

Step 7:  Enjoy the rest of the evening, because this tenderloin steak and salad recipe provides the added ingredient of an easy cleanup.

After that terrible day, I was completely determined to back up all my contacts from my new smart phone to the Cloud. With a little online research I learned the art of backing up all my contacts, photos and more. But, I was still not satisfied that I would not wind up without a phone at one of my events. That concern prompted me to do some more research in the area of protective cell phone cases. You can also make wood or cardboard propellers to transform it to a steampunk pirate airship. Have pirate ship, will travel. Our pirate ship design creates a pirate ship that is made to travel with ease. Our wooden ship folds in half and fits in your hatch back with the seats folded down. We actually transported our pirate ship in a Toyota Prius. We loaded it through the hatch with the back seats folded down. And another time we loaded it up in a Hyundai Tucson the same way.

Argh! You don’t have to be an expert to make this simple pirate ship party prop and with a few easy additions you can make a steampunk pirate airship as well. Avast me hearties! You will need the following items and tools to build a pirate ship like this one:

  • Saber saw
  • Lightweight wood ¼” to ¾” plywood
  • Wood glue
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws
  • 2 Metal hinges
  • Wood cleat to construct masts
  • Nuts and bolts (2 sets per mast)
  • Pencil or marker (to outline ship)
  • Paint for body of ship and masts
  • Paint for the optional ocean waves

 

Instructions on How to Build a Pirate Ship:

  • Refer to the photos above and click on each photo for a larger view
  • On your plywood, free hand the ship outline and any windows or cutouts you want on your ship, such as cutout for cannons
  • Cut out your pirate ship design with your saber saw
  • Then cut the pirate ship in half
    • Attach hinges (as shown) to the rear of the ship
  • If you would like to add some extra design to your pirate ship, here is what we did:
    • Using scrap plywood, form long strips and glue them to the front of the ship
    • Use the plywood from your cutouts to create a design by gluing them below the long strips you glued above
  • Create the masts for your pirate ship using the wood cleat
    • If you want your ship to travel, be sure to construct it to easily detach and re-attach the masts and remember to bring your tools
  • You may also want to create an ocean waves feature on the bottom of your ship
    • Draw the ocean waves design on plywood
    • Cut out your wave design
    • Attach the ocean waves design to the pirate ship with wood glue
  • Important! You should consider how your pirate ship will be securely displayed at the birthday party. It is very important to decide if you need to make any additions or modifications in order to safely display your pirate ship to ensure it does not fall backward or forwards.

Think about seeing things in Victorian times that would never seem scientifically possible, maybe a flying car like the one in an old animated film or maybe a flying pirate ship powered by a hot air balloon and propellers or maybe by an airship (dirigible). Look at the fashion during that conventional and straight laced era in time. Mix the prim and proper Victorian period of dress with, what would seem like, futuristic accessories and you have steampunk fashion. Just think industrial revolution on steroids and high fashion raging right along with it.

Even if you are just a guest, a steampunk party is not just something you attend, rather you “prepare” for it. If you know some crafty ladies, you may even want to get together with them for a pre-party; that is a steampunk craft party in order to make steampunk hats with decorations. What kind of decorations are needed for a steampunk hat and for a steampunk costume or outfit? Whether you have been invited to a steampunk pirate party or a general steampunk theme party the costume and accessory possibilities are endless. I bet you have clothes in the back of your closet that will work in creating a steampunk costume.

Some costumes worn to a Renaissance Fair can also work really well for steampunk with a few alterations and additions. After that, all you need do is find some accessories. I got most of my steampunk accessories on Amazon. I purchased a felt top hat real cheap from Amazon and decorated it with an old fashioned Victorian style key and some small bronze and gold colored imitation gears. So here is how easy and fast you can have a Steampunk hat! I did this in just a few minutes with old jewelry, hat pin, wine cork key chain and a key from Amazon. I still have some small imitation gears (also purchased) from Amazon to attach to the hat. Don’t have my goggles yet and I haven’t glued it all together, but you get the idea.

We all know that June is “THE” month for Weddings! But why is it so? It may be that wedding events are celebrated primarily in June due to the more favorable weather conditions: not too hot; not too cold; not to rainy; and not too windy. And in most areas, the children are out of school for the summer. That means wedding guests who must travel to attend the blessed wedding event are more apt to be free to do so. June is also a month when florists generally have a greater selection of flowers to offer their wedding event planners for those beautiful and elaborate bridal bouquets.

There is thought to be a historical reason why June may have become quite popular as a month for Weddings. Some like to harken back to the days when farmers had to be concerned about having enough hands to help with harvest time schedules. A marriage in June resulting in a very timely July or August pregnancy might very well result in the bride being physically able to assist with harvesting chores. While most of us are no longer matrimonially motivated by harvesting schedules, June weddings remain in fashion and ever popular. June bridal parties continue to be en vogue and the predominant choice for wedding nuptials.



On the more ethereal side, June is named after an ancient Roman goddess. This goddess was said to be the wife of Jupiter and believed to be the goddess of matrimony and the matrimonial home. Therefore, to be married in June was believed to be good luck and would ensure the bride and groom enjoyed a long and happy marriage.

We all know that there will be some event needs that will take up the lion’s share of our budget. Therefore, you should set aside a large portion of the event budget to cover those absolute necessities such as the party venue, food and entertainment costs. Once you have a handle on how much of your budget will go to the higher priced priorities, then you will know where you stand with on how much you can allocate for decorating and other party supplies. My little boy was approaching his fifth birthday. I was planning his five year old birthday party and I was thinking of what birthday presents I would give him. I wasn’t rich by any means, but I was usually able to get him several birthday gifts, so between the gifts he received from me and from other family members, he always ended up with tons of great birthday gifts. Then it dawned on me that this year would be a little different. Different, because his little sister was beginning to understand a lot more about things like children’s birthdays and birthday presents. I realized that she would be disappointed to see her brother receiving lots of birthday presents and there she would sit with none. Well that bothered me. It bothered me to the point that what I decided to do was to buy her one “birthday” gift. Then on the day of my son’s birthday his little sister watched as he opened all his birthday presents. She was very well behaved, but as the last birthday gift was opened the disappointed look on her face was hard to miss.


That’s when I reached under the table and presented her with a lovely gift wrapped present. Her eyes grew wide and so did her smile as she tore the pretty Hello Kitty gift wrap from the box. She was thrilled with the pink hair My Little Pony and hugged it tightly and gave me a great big hug too. So that was the beginning of new family birthday tradition. Every year on each of my children’s birthday, the other child always received one “birthday” gift. My children came to believe that this was just the norm until they went to the birthday parties of friends and they did not receive a “birthday” present. Well, I can’t be responsible for everything! LOL! Now after all these years, the family tradition continues with my grandchildren. All my grandchildren can be sure that when grandma arrives, you get a gift, you get a gift, and you get a gift!

And you may be able to borrow a belt from the man in your life to wear pirate style, which is low and loose. You probably also have a scarf that can be tied around you head as a pirate bandana. Do you have any cool high top pirate style boots? Yep, I thought so. Those boots will make great like great boots for a pirate! What about your jewelry? I bet you have some big hoop earrings that work perfectly with your self made pirate costume. So there you go, you are all ready for a pirate theme party and you have your pirate outfit without spending a dime.

Favorite Party Potluck Dishes

POLLY’S PEA SALAD

Susan reminisced about potluck parties we planned, hosted and attended over the years. We love to talk recipes at tea time. We talked about our favorite potluck dishes, Martha’s White Chili, Nellie’s Mexican Casserole, and Sue’s Corned Beef with Cabbage, Cheese and Broccoli Quiche just to name a few. Ah yes, Susan and I were getting hungry now.

Then Susan exclaimed, “You know what I really loved the most? And quickly followed up with, “That pea salad, that delicious old fashioned pea salad that you know who brought to that party, you know, that party!” I thought it over for a few moments and then it came to me in a delightful flash! Polly’s Pea Salad! Yes, Susan was quite right. Pollys Pea Salad was very delicious and yes it was also on the old-fashioned side. Polly’s Pea Salad was delicious but it wasn’t just Susan’s favorite, it was one of everyone’s favorite potluck dishes. 

Sadly, Polly passed away a few years ago. Polly had given me the coveted recipe and I knew I must have it somewhere. I proceeded to check all my Word file folders for a document named Polly’s Pea Salad…but found nothing. Then I checked all my file folders on my laptop and on my tablet, but still no Pollys Pea Salad. Well Susan and I decided to go out to lunch because we had developed quite an appetite talking about food and Polly’s Pea Salad. The entire day passed without me knowing what had happened to Polly’s Pea Salad recipe.

The next morning when I awoke, yep, you guessed it, I was still thinking about Polly’s Pea Salad. I went to the storage room and began rummaging through boxes filled with cookbooks and loose sheets of paper with hand-written recipes on them. Just when I was about to give up on ever finding it, there it was! Polly’s Pea Salad! The recipe was scrawled in Polly’s chicken-scratch handwriting. I went right to work typing up the recipe taking care to get the “translation” right. So here is a perfect and easy potluck dish to bring to a spring or summer party event. Everyone is sure to love it!

POLLY’S PEA SALAD

2 boiled eggs dices

1 boiled egg thinly sliced (reserve for later)

½ cup diced sharp cheddar cheese

¼ cup diced sweet onion (optional)

1 (15 ounce) can early peas (sweet peas) – drained

¼ cup salad dressing (Hellmann’s® Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip®)

2-4 slices crumbled bacon (optional)

1/2 tsp. paprika (optional)

salt and pepper to taste

2 quart or 2 ½ liter mixing bowl

Place one-half of the peas in a mixing bowl. Place 1/23 of salad dressing on top of peas. Add one-half of onions and one-half of the diced eggs. Do not mix.

Repeat above adding another layer of all ingredients. Fold ingredients from middle to outside being careful not to smash the peas.

Transfer to a decorative serving dish. Place egg slices on top. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon. Chill to serve.

Polly’s Pea Salad was delicious but it wasn’t just Susan’s favorite, it was everyone’s favorite.
